CAREER IN VETERINARY
Introduction
               The branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of animals (especially domestic animals). Veterinary Science deals with the study of animal health care, breeding, feeding and management practices. The job of a veterinarian is challenging keeping in view the wide range of animals.The country is endowed with vast livestock resources, The livestock industry of India contributes to 8% of the GDP, where as 32% of GDP contribution from the agricultural industry comes from the livestock itself. The demand of veterinarian to take care of this huge livestock is on the rise. Due to commercialization of veterinary Industry and the liberalization of Indian Government Policies, more and more international industries of food manufacturing, pharmaceutical, diagnostic and vaccine production etc., have opened up demand for veterinary professionals.

               Veterinary Science offers a large number of avenues of work and the demand for Veterinary doctors has increased tremendously, which is as follows

  • 1.Government departments like Animal Husbandry Departments, Poultry Farms, Dairy Farms, Sheep and Rabbit Farms, Race Clubs, Stud Farms, Private and  Government Veterinary Hospitals and Clinics.
  • 2. Wildlife sanctuaries and zoological parks
  • 3. Army and the Border Security Forces
  • 4. Private practice
  • 5. Teaching in veterinary colleges and universities.
  • 6. Pharmaceutical industries for R&D work 
  • 7.Veterinary Surgeons in government and private hospitals
  • 8. Technical Sales, Agribusiness, Marketing, Pet Food Manufacturing Industries and in Management of Industries dealing with Animal Feed, Animal Products,   Milk and Meat Products processing industries etc.
  •  9. Various NGO's (working for animals) and social awareness campaigns also require Veterinarians. 
Eligibility
The candidate Should pass senior higher secondary examination equivalent to 10+2 with last 2 years of study with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. After that a competitive exam organized by government or private bodies has to be passed. 
 B.V.Sc. & A. H. (Bachelor of veterinary science and animal husbandry) is of four years. After passing the exam the vets get a license to work with a hospital, laboratory, organization or start your own private clinic.
