CAREER IN MERCHANT NAVY
Introduction
According to wikipedia Merchant navy is all non-military ships including bulk carriers, coasters, container ships, tankers, passenger liners, etc., but excluding fishing and research vessels, listed on the official registry of a country. It is also called merchant marine. For those who love adventure and has passion of traveling far and wide on seas, Merchant Navy offers a very lucrative career and ensures a good life. It's a amazing fact that the ships carry 90 percent of world trade. Owing to Globalization Indian shipping fleet is increasing in numbers and shipping tonnage. There is abundant scope for expansion since our ships carry only 43 percent of the country's seaborne trade. There is a shortage of about 12000 sea going marine professionals in the shipping industry as per the latest BIMCO study.
The areas of activity in Merchant Navy are broadly grouped in three categories:
Eligibility
for Merchant Navy-For deck cadet on board a ship after completing 10 + 2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and train on the job for three years. After the on-job training one has to appear for the competency examination, as required by the Union Ministry of Surface Transport, to be eligible to become a Navigation Officer. To join the navigation or marine engineering branch of Merchant Navy, one must have a bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Marine Engineering or a degree of B.Sc. in Nautical Science from any recognized university of institute. Ministry of Surface Transport, Government of India, takes care of the training needs and conducts competency exam through the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). Courses in Merchant Navy
Navigating Officers have to undergo three-year training course in the theoretical and practical aspect of nautical science. This training imparted in the training ship(TS)Chanakya,Mumbai.At the end of three-year course the cadets are awarded by the B.SC.Nautical Science by the university of Mumbai. After successful compilation of this cadet officers have to complete one year in the deck department before being able for the second mates certificate of competency. During this period a nominal stipend is paid to them. The Marine Engineering Research Institute(MERI) Kolkata , formerly known as the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training(DMET), imparts training in marine engineering. Admission to most institutions is on the basis of written tests and interviews. Medical standards are uniformly imposed. In short
One has to accomplish at least two years of service at sea after completion of the three-year B.Sc. degree in Nautical Science to get a certificate of competency of Second Mate. This certificate is issued by the Union Ministry of Surface Transport and is a must if one wants to get a job on board a merchant ship. The certificate of T.S.
