Introduction
The cost accountant deal with the budgets, costing systems, inventory control, investment analysis, cost audit, fund management, price planning, and guiding the management to take profitable decisions. The Institute of Cost and Work Accountants is the only recognised statutory professional organisation and licensing body in India specialising exclusively in Cost and Management Accountancy .
A cost accountant is generally involved in the following functions:-
Eligibility
After completing Class Xl exams, one has to appear for the foundation exam of ICWA course. There will be a separate coaching class to train students for the foundation exam. The course syllabus for the includes organization and management fundamentals, accounting, economics and business fundamentals, business mathematics and statistics fundamentals. After passing this exam, the student can apply for the ICWA Intermediate Course which has two stages. Here the student has the option of pursuing this course through correspondence or by attending oral coaching. On passing the intermediate course, the student has to appear for the final course, also having two stages.
Future Prospects
The scope for a cost accountant is immense. Currently there is a huge demand for cost accountants but the professionals are less. There are job requirements in Public Sector Undertakings (PSU), MNC’s and lot of other companies. Private companies hire cost accountants as financial advisors. ICWAI passed candidates can hold top management positions, Viz. Managing Director, Finance Director, Financial Controller, Accountant, Cost Controller, Finance Manager, Chief Internal Auditor etc. in public and private sector organisations. Fellow members of the Institute would be treated at par with the persons holding Ph.D. degree as far as appointment in the posts of Professor, Associate Professor, Reader, Asstt. Professor and Lecturer in Professional / Management Institutes are concerned.
